Less than a degree below the Arctic Circle, Chena Hot Springs is at the end of a 50 mile road from Fairbanks. The folks at the resort have turned a natural spring into a beautiful outdoor 105 degree swimming pool.

Live in an ugly, lame Fairbanks suburb? Rename it North Pole and hilarity ensues.

And enormous Santas dominate the landscape.

On the Richardson Highway from Fairbanks to Valdez

We'd hoped to drive the Denali highway, a mostly-dirt road across the center of the state. Unfortunately, flooding created a 14-foot hole in it and we were only able to drive a short, beautiful stretch of it.

Breathtaking nevertheless and high on my list of highways to drive in their entirity.
