Lots of folks in Alaska seem to maintain dog teams. Some do it for practical reasons - snowmobiles break down, and they can't find their way home if you get lost. Others do it to run in the Iditarod, a 10+ day race from Anchorage to Nome. |
These dogs belong to Raimey Reddington, son of Joe Reddington, Sr., who created the Iditarod sled dog race. They've run the race several times. |
They're disconcertingly fast. We were being pulled by eight 40-pound dogs... who managed to pull three of us and a wheeled sled at about 10 miles an hour in 90 degree heat. |
